70 / (1.70 × 1.70) = 24.2

BMI Categories and Their Meaning

The World Health Organization has set the following categories for BMI values:

  • Below 18.5 → Underweight

  • 18.5 – 24.9 → Normal weight

  • 25 – 29.9 → Overweight

  • 30 – 34.9 → Obesity Class I

  • 35 – 39.9 → Obesity Class II

  • 40 and above → Obesity Class III (Severe Obesity)

These ranges provide general guidelines. However, BMI does not directly measure body fat or muscle mass. For example, athletes with high muscle density may have a higher BMI but not excess body fat.
